What's to Love about Miami International Airport
It is possible to fly from Miami to more than 150 destinations worldwide without having to catch another plane. This is particularly true of Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite its massive size, this airport is easy to navigate. Terminal D is even served by a skytrain.
The Miami Airport is full of art. Pay special attention to the Brazilian murals decorating the walls in the South Terminal along with the artistic reminder that All We Need is Love in Terminal D.
While the Miami Airport has three lounges, the best food is found at the Centurion Lounge where Miami's top chefs Michelle Bernstein oversees food preparation. This lounge also features showers if you need to freshen up before a long trip.
Children adore playing in the children's area called Plane Fun located on Concourse E. They can pretend to fly a plane there, try out the job of being an airport traffic controller or pretend to ride in a hot air balloon. The exhibits in this area are created by the award-winning Miami Children's Museum. MIAMamma Suites throughout the airport make great places to nurse a baby in privacy, and they are big enough to hold a small family.
What You May Hate at Miami International Airport
By most airport standards, WiFi is very expensive at Miami International Airport. You can receive 30 minutes for free. Otherwise, you have to choose between a 24-hour or a four-hour plan. You can get free WiFi, but the amount of advertising almost makes it not worthwhile. If you need computer access, then head to the International Currency Exchange Business Center, the Lobby Bar or the seventh-floor workstations. Otherwise, head to one of the lounges.
Fun Things to Do at Miami International Airport
There are some great spots to dine at the Miami International Airport. If you are looking for great Cuban food, then make sure to try La Carreta or Caf? Versailles. If you are already missing home cooking, then try the black Angus meatloaf at Icebox Cafe.
Look your best for your trip by getting a manicure or a pedicure at 10 Minute Manicure or start working on your tan by getting a spray tan at Jetsetter Spa.
If you see a golden retriever accompanied by a volunteer at the airport, feel free to go up and say hello. This dog is specially trained to look for nervous passengers so that he can cuddle with them. He loves meeting the public as does his master.
The Miami International Airport has its own yoga room with complimentary yoga mats. This room is open from 9 AM to 9 PM helping people get in their yoga routine even when they are traveling.
History of Miami International Airport
The first airport in Miami opened on 36th Street in 1928, and it was the first airport to have a dedicated passenger terminal in the United States. Voters passed the first airport-revenue bond in the United States allowing the newly formed Miami-Dade Aviation Department to start construction on a new airport in 1948. Today, the airport services over 21 million passengers on 80 different airlines.
