The Pros of Bradley International

We enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this airport. It's midsize, and most travelers have a pleasant experience here whether it's just to take a break before their flight or get some shuteye overnight. In fact, many overnighters remark upon the quality of sleep particularly in some hallways, where there are benches and solitude. If you're an economy passenger with a day pass, there are some lounges open to you, and the one in lower level baggage is equipped with some nice couches and a TV for entertainment and comfort. Late night travelers will no doubt appreciate that two of the airport's dining options and a Dunkin' Donuts keep extended hours. Free WiFi is available.

A Few Cons

We always prefer if there are lounges that don't require anything special from economy passengers, though it's good to see there are several throughout Bradley. However, one of the lounges lists hours of operation; late arrivals may not have access depending on the time. It's great that some of the food options have long hours, but there are no 24-hour stores yet. Curiously for an international airport, there is also no currency exchange. Checkpoints will close at night, and if you're a redeye passenger, you'll need to sleep landside, so plan accordingly.

Your Shopping & Dining Options

We are quite impressed with the variety of shops and dining establishments available at Bradley. For shopping, Cover-2-Cover and InMotion Entertainment provide reading and viewing materials, respectively, and feature broad selections. You'll also find duty-free shopping and niche services like a professional shoe shine. There's a fascinating glass jewelry gift shop, and even a Brooks Brothers outlet. Food options are great too, with standard fare like McDonald's, or you can try something a bit more upscale, with a seafood establishment or nice tap bar. Fresh City will give you sub sandwiches, and you can pick up some confectionary for the road at the candy shop.

Historical Facts

History buffs may find it interesting that the airport was first used by the military, following the sale of the land just prior to the Second World War. It remained that way throughout the war and only began its life as a commercial airport in 1948, after a year of civil use. You can check out the New England Air Museum for much more information on the airport during this period. By 1950, the airport was handling much more traffic than experts estimated, and another terminal opened in 1952. A significant event occurred in 1979 when a tornado came through the area, damaging most of the east side of the airport. Most of the damage was to the air museum, which reopened in 1982.
