Travelers Adore Features at Pittsburgh Airport
Recently, Pittsburgh International Airport became the first in the nation to allow those who were not catching a flight access to airside terminals. Obviously, this is a huge advantage because families and business colleagues can spend longer with the person before they leave, and greet them sooner when they arrive.
Travelers can pamper themselves before or after a flight by getting a spa treatment including manicures and pedicures at the XpressSpa located in Concourse B.
Families love the activities in seven centers located inside Kidsports in Concourse C. In addition to keeping little one's content, nursing mothers will find a special area just for them. A family area makes it easy to relax while feeding and changing babies. This area includes exhibits from the Children's Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, so even if travelers do not have children, they will want to check it out.
Make sure to check out the artwork located throughout the airport including a 69,000-square-foot Center Core floor mosaic along with changing exhibits from the Andy Warhol Museum.
Why Travelers Hate the Pittsburgh Airport
One of the main reasons to hate the Pittsburgh Airport is the lack of places to charge electronics. Make sure to check near the gates as there are usually empty plugs there. If travelers have access to the lounges or want to pay the day fee, then this may be another option.
It is difficult to move from one terminal to the other on the people mover at the Pittsburgh Airport. Travelers should prepare for this problem by leaving as much time between flights when needing to change terminals as possible.
Checkpoint security can be a problem at times. The busiest times are usually Monday mornings from 5 AM to 7 AM and Sunday afternoons from 4 PM to 7 PM. Avoid these times when possible.
Fun Things to Do at the Pittsburgh Airport
The Pittsburgh Airport has two shops worth checking out for local sports fans. Sportzburgh offers fan merchandise for Pirates, Penguins and Steelers fans while Black and Gold offers unique Steelers merchandise.
Not many airports can boast that they have a t-rex dinosaur living in it. See the dinosaur in Concourse C.
History and Future of the Pittsburgh Airport
The Pittsburgh Airport used to be a major hub airport, but that is no longer the case. It is quickly, however, becoming a major focal point for discount airlines. Therefore, city officials have listened and are planning a new airport at the current location. A $1 billion terminal with 51 gates will be constructed eliminating the need for the people mover. The airport hopes that the vacated terminal can be turned into retail shopping space. Otherwise, it will be demolished. They hope to start construction on the new terminal in 2018 with completion set for 2023.
