The Best of Richmond Airport

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is considered to be a "small" airport, though it does have two concourses and many conveniences that will make your time there enjoyable. The facilities are modern and kept to a high standard of cleanliness, and many travelers will particularly like the various dining options available here; quite a few considering the size of the airport. There's also a chapel where you can find a bit of peace, ATM and cash machines, and a currency exchange in case you need to grab some foreign currency before your destination. Free WiFi is available throughout.

Some Minor Irritations For Travelers

While there are a lot of things to like about Richmond International, we noticed a few things that are likely to cause a bit of discomfort to the weary traveler. For one, the seating is uncomfortable, especially for travelers who choose to stay overnight. For this reason, most people sleep on the floor at Richmond. We recommend bringing a handy travel mattress if you know you'll be staying the night here. While there are shops available (we'll list some of our favorites below), we find that there are no duty-free options, which may be a disappointment to some passengers. There are also no showers for those overnighters wishing to clean up.

Great Shopping and Dining

There are a great dining or shopping options open to you at Richmond, considering the size of the airport. Hudson News operates both a newsstand and a bookstand and sells hundreds of periodicals or books for your reading pleasure. There's a nice gift shop in "Discovery Virginia," as it offers a plethora of unique items from around the Commonwealth. KidsWorks is a fine option if you're traveling with little ones and need to grab something quick to keep them occupied while you take a breather.

For food, go to"Cheeburger Cheeburger," or slightly more upscale dining experiences in Applebee's and Club Level Grill. Best of all, many of Richmond's restaurants open as early as 4 am, increasing your lunch and dinner windows.

Steeped in History

Almost a century ago--1927--the airport was called the Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field, a fitting honor for aviator Richard Byrd. Charles Lindbergh himself attended the ceremony. The airport underwent a number of renovations and upgrades including a new terminal building and various expansions. By 1984, it was the fourth-largest airport in the state. Richmond International isn't just a favorite terminal for passengers, handling over one hundred thousand annual landings and takeoffs. It's also a frequent stop for important officials; the previous two Presidents have made stops at RIC aboard Air Force One a combined ten times.
