Things You'll Enjoy at RNO

Reno-Tahoe may seem rather small at first, but it packs a fair amount of decent amenities and conveniences for an airport of its size. There are a fair amount of food and drink options, though these mostly operate according to current flight schedules; late night passengers will need to plan accordingly.

There's mobile charging for your devices available in the "productivity center," and a bank of phones even allows you to make free courtesy calls as necessary, a nice touch if you're in dire need and don't have your cell phone. Free WiFi is also available. Baggage Claim has some pretty nice benches for sleeping or resting, and they're near restrooms for a bonus.

And Things You Might Not Enjoy

While we think it does have some pretty nice areas for catching a break, the airport can be uncommonly loud with its on-air announcements; late-night travelers might consider earplugs. Vending machines are your only option for food if you miss the windows for the proper food shops; most passengers arriving at night will. Most of the drawbacks adversely affect those who have early morning flights and have chosen to stay at the airport, but we still prefer it when all passengers can have a pleasant stay, no matter the hour. Keep in mind that even if you are a daytime passenger, restaurants are open according to flight schedules. Generally at least one is open thirty minutes before the first departure.

Things to Do at Reno-Tahoe

If you are a daytime commuter--or just a restless nighttime one-- there's plenty to do at RNO. For eating, you can't go wrong with Timber Ridge, featuring a genuine Tahoe theme, various burgers, and sandwiches, as well as healthy options and a pretty extensive wine list. There's standard fare like McDonald's, and many other sit-down full-service areas to try. A selection of retail stores includes outdoor apparel, golf supplies, high-tech gadgets and entertainment options, and more. Lastly, there are some great extra features at RNO such as a kids' play area, post office, gaming machines and even a dog park.

A Bit About RNO

In some ways, the Reno-Tahoe Airport operates almost like a city unto itself. It employs nearly twenty-five hundred workers in various areas of staff, emergency personnel, maintenance and other fields to make the airport function like a well-oiled machine only five minutes from the busy downtown area. The Reno Air National Guard Base also calls RNO its home. History buffs and mystery enthusiasts alike will be interested to know that the famous still-unknown thief "D.B. Cooper" was on board a plane that landed at Reno-Tahoe at his direction in 1971, ostensibly for refueling purposes. He was already gone by the time authorities searched the plane, and his whereabouts remain a mystery of some renown.
