Remembering What’s Important

Recently, I was talking to a friend who stayed at a well-known hotel chain during her granddaughter’s wedding. While the ceremony itself went off without a hitch, she had several small issues with her stay. The room condition was not quite up to the standard she expected – nothing major, mind you, but the curtains were slightly torn, there were some small holes in the corner of the ceiling, the telephone cord was not connected, and the ice machine down the hall was not working; several of her family members made similar comments.

When I asked if she took her concerns to the hotel’s management, she laughed. “I was going to, but then I stopped and thought for a moment. The ballroom (where the wedding was held) was spectacular and all the employees I encountered were very pleasant, going out of their way to make it a wonderful day. Why would I let these minor things ruin the whole event?”

I thought she made a very valid point. While we all want things to be perfect, they rarely are. Taking a moment to visualize the big picture can often help us prioritize better. Years from now, as my friend looks back on the wedding, is she going to remember that there was a water stain on the wall of her room? Of course not. In her mind, she will see how beautiful and happy her granddaughter was as she started on her new journey. And that’s how it should be.
