One Last Summer Getaway

With summer coming to a close and back to school is just around the corner, our family decided it was the perfect time to plan a family trip to Michigan. We stayed at the Inn At Bay Harbor resort on the shore of Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay. While it offers all of the modern amenities of an elegant resort, we felt like we were back in time with the old world charm and Victorian decor. We traveled with my two and a half month old granddaughter, and the staff could not have been more accommodating of our needs.

There is something to do for every member of the family; you can do as much or as little as you prefer. The pool overlooking Lake Michigan has the Cabana Bar serving drinks and snacks. There’s a private beach just steps away, where you can swim, hunt for beautiful Petoskey stone fossils, or just relax in one of the cabanas. The Inn even provides bicycles, should you wish to take a ride along the shore! It’s within walking distance of the marina if you are a boating enthusiast, and after you’ve witnessed one of the spectacular sunsets from the beach, there’s a bonfire where you can make your own s’mores. The full service spa and salon is perfect for pampering, with views of the water. The spa also offers yoga classes by the bay on Saturdays.

There are several dining options, from the casual Inn Café and South American Grille to the elegant Sagamore’s for fine dining. Both the South American Grille and Sagamore’s offer terrace dining overlooking the water. (Here’s a tip… Be sure to order the lobster flatbread from the tapas menu at South American Grille, and the locally sourced crab encrusted whitefish from Sagamore’s!)

Should you wish to venture away from the resort, there are several beautiful beaches in the Bay Harbor/Petoskey area, as well as the Bay Harbor Golf Club on the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. The nearby town of Petoskey is a shopper’s dream. Be sure to make a stop at Kilwins for fudge, as well as the Grand Traverse Pie Company for a slice of their unforgettable cherry crumb pie. Both Kilwins and Grand Traverse Pie Company also provide mail order for you to enjoy long after the memory of your vacation and treats are gone!

With cool weather fast approaching, a stay in Bay Harbor may be just what you need to enjoy these last few weeks of summer.
