Earlier this year, travel giant Expedia released their “Hotel Etiquette Study.” This study measured, among other things, the particular aggravating behaviors that annoy fellow travelers. Take a look at the top 10 results from the study and follow our tips to ensure you aren’t the hotel guest everyone is complaining about on your next trip.

10.) Elevator Chatterboxes – Small talk in elevators is just fine, but having to hear someone’s whole life story in the time it takes to go up 4 floors is just excessive. If you’re sharing an elevator with someone and you feel the urge to strike up a conversation, keep it casual and brief.

9.) Business Bar Boozers – Nothing’s worse than sitting down at the bar on vacation and having a drunk guy in a business suit strike up a conversation filled with gripes and expletives. If you’re staying at a hotel for work while everyone else is enjoying their vacation time, try to keep drinking to a minimum (or at least know your limit) to avoid pestering other guests.

8.) Hot Tub Canoodlers – Hot tubs are sexy, we get it. But hotel hot tubs aren’t designated public make-out spaces, especially when families are present. Have respect for the guests that are sharing the hot tub with you, and try to keep your hands to yourself. If you are head-over-heels for your partner and find it difficult not displaying that publicly, you can always retire to your room.

7.) Poolside Partiers – Vacations are perfect for letting loose and having a blast without any responsibilities. But that doesn’t mean you can treat a hotel pool as if it’s your personal backyard domain. Guests that are drunk, loud, or obnoxious in the pool tend to irk the other guests that are trying to relax or enjoy their surroundings. If you are planning on spending lots of time at your hotel’s pool, be considerate of the other travelers by keeping your antics to a minimum.

6.) The Loudly Amorous – Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon or just a getaway without the kids, we all understand that things heat up while on vacation. That doesn’t mean the whole floor of the hotel needs to hear you getting it on, though. So the next time you’re in your hotel room and things start getting hot and heavy, remember that there are other people around you that are not interested in your escapades and try to keep it down.

5.) Bickerers – Vacations are like little slices of fantasy and nothing ruins that facade quicker than two people fighting during your trip. If you have to fight with your companion, do so behind closed doors so you don’t make other hotel guests uncomfortable.

4.) Complainers – Complainers don’t just make themselves miserable, they make everyone around them miserable, as well. When on vacation, it’s even worse. Find the silver lining when you can. You could always be at work, right? We know vacations cost a lot of dough, but if there are legitimate issues worth complaining about, do it to the staff and not the other guests.

3.) In-Room Revelers – Noise is a big complaint for people on vacation. Some hotel guests come to party, while others come to relax and rejuvenate. Nothing is worse than trying to take an afternoon nap and hearing the TV next door blaring, or people in the hallway shouting. When in your hotel, do try to use your inside voices only.

2.) Hallway Hell Raisers – You’re drifting off to slumber when you’re abruptly awoken by doors banging across the hall and running footsteps. Welcome to number 2 on Expedia’s list! It’s OK to stay out and party when on vacation (by all means, live it up!) But, it’s not OK to keep other guests from resting because of your shenanigans. If you must come back at 3AM, try to do so with respect for the other guests: quietly.

1.) Inattentive Parents  – A whopping 67% of guests state that kids running amok is their biggest pet peeve when it comes to hotel guest behavior. A vacation with your children should not equate to letting them run wild while you sit back with a few martinis. I’m sure you think your child is a darling, but not everyone will share that point of view. A very easy fix for this is just to keep an eye on your children and make sure they aren’t annoying strangers that didn’t sign up to be resort babysitters.
