Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) Airport Guide
Things You will Love about Phoenix's Airport
If you need to get work done while you are at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport, then check out the workstations by Southwest's gates. If you are content to use your own devices, then there are plugins by all four checkpoints and pre-security in terminal four. The airport has free unlimited internet.
If you are bringing along your pet, then this airport has nine pet parks. These parks are not only designed for pets to take care of their business, but they are fenced, so dogs can run around and get the exercise that they need.
Each terminal has at least one restaurant that is open 24 hours a day. This airport has many great inexpensive places to dine, but paying less money does not mean you will be disappointed in the quality of the food. In particular, check out Chelsea's Kitchen in Terminal 4 for a glass of sauvignon blanc along with a short-rib taco or Wildflower Bread Company in the same terminal for a great scone or a bowl of delicious soup.
Check out the airport museum in each terminal. In Terminal 2 pay special attention to The Phoenix. Paul Coze used 57 different materials to create this work of art. In Terminal 3, pay special attention to the beautiful desert sky ceiling tiles while in Terminal 4 do not miss the rotating display of glasswork. The International Walkway contains large-format pictures of ranching families who have been farming in Arizona for more than 100 years.
Shopping is great at this airport. In particular, it is a great place to pick up pieces of artwork and jewelry made by local Native Americans. The award-winning Heard Museum maintains a store at the library that is a fascinating place to browse.
This airport participates in the mail-back program. If you cannot take something on a flight with you because of security regulations, they will mail it back to you assuming the post office allows it. Also, many merchants will gladly mail your purchases to you saving you on the hassles of carrying it with you.
What You May Hate About Phoenix's Airport
Many organizations have voted Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport the best in the nation, so there really is not much to dislike. One problem that needs to be addressed, however, is signage. If you run into a problem, look for the ambassadors who will be glad to help you find your way.
Fun Things to Do at Phoenix's Airport
While almost every airport has a bookstore or two, Phoenix's airport has several locations allowing you to trade in the book you just finished for a different one. Participating merchants include Desert News & Gifts, CNBC News, Press Express and Phoenix TravelMart.
History of the Phoenix Airport
While Sky Harbor seems like a modern airport in many different ways, it traces its history back to 1928 when Scenic Airlines built one runway. During Black Friday, the airline collapsed a year later. Acme Investment Company obtained the property selling it to the city in 1935 for $100,000. Terminal 2 opened in 1962 while Terminal 3 opened in 1979. Officially called the Barry M. Goldwater Terminal, Terminal 4 opened 1990.
